Types of Whitening Toothpastes

There has been a rise in the popularity of cosmetic dentistry and related treatments. The most common dental treatment is the whitening of teeth. Though each person’s natural teeth vary in color, some people’s teeth get noticeably discolored or stained over time. While more badly stained teeth need professional whitening treatment, people who have slight stains usually opt for over-the-counter products to tackle the problem. One of the popular main teeth whitening products is whitening toothpaste.

While most toothpaste has similar basic ingredients like thickeners, flavors, and humectants, whitening toothpaste has added ingredients that the manufacturers claim will be able to whiten stained teeth. The efficacy of these toothpaste products varies from person to person. Some of the main teeth whitening products in whitening toothpaste are listed here:

  • Bleaching agents
Similar to whitening treatments and some over-the-counter whitening products, toothpaste has been manufactured with mild bleaching agents. These bleaching agents are usually not as strong as other products as toothpaste is used every day, and overexposure to these chemicals could potentially harm the teeth. Baking soda is a home remedy that people use to brighten the appearance of their teeth. Manufacturers also include this ingredient in their products to whiten the teeth. Some products also use hydrogen peroxide.
Though these toothpaste formulations improve the look of teeth in the long term, there is always the danger that they could damage the enamel of the teeth. It always pays to buy from reputed companies and brands and closely adhere to the manufacturer’s recommendations and instructions for use. Some people find that the use of whitening products results in the teeth becoming overly sensitive.
  • Salt
Salt has been used as an abrasive ingredient in toothpaste. It also has the effect of lowering the acidity levels in the mouth.
  • Charcoal
Some companies include activated charcoal in their whitening toothpaste. While there is no definitive research to show that activated charcoal whitens the teeth, the abrasive action of these particles makes them effective to dislodge and clean superficial stains and polish the surface of the teeth.
  • Blue Covarine
Several types of toothpaste incorporating Blue Covarine improve the appearance of teeth not by removing stains but by adding a more blue tint to the teeth. This does not whiten the teeth in any way, but it creates the look of less yellow teeth.

Regardless of which brand or type of main teeth whitening products you use, it is always better to consult a dentist. A dentist will be able to analyze if the discoloration is because of staining or caused by any other dental issue. Sometimes, damage to the internal structure of the tooth can also cause the color difference. Also, if left untreated, it could become a more serious dental problem. One must be aware that using whitening products on teeth and gums that are not good for health can further aggravate the problem.
