Eco-friendly Tips for Lawn Care

A beautiful and colorful garden is the best sight a plant lover could wish for. A lawn, in particular, is one of the most treasured assets of one who loves nature, gardening, or both. Maintaining a lawn, however, is no joke as it requires a lot of work, time, and energy. The result of taking care of your lawn can be refreshing and worth the effort you put in. It’s also important to remember that whatever you do must not negatively affect the ecosystem, so keep your activities green. Here are some eco-friendly and green tips for lawn care:

  • Use eco-friendly products
Maintaining your lawn might require the usage of many products, but ensure that all the products you use are eco-friendly. This includes products that are soil-friendly, save water, and are recyclable.
  • Rake
You may find it frustrating to keep up with the falling leaves that build up on your lawn, especially during fall. However, it is important to do so to keep your lawn in good condition. Fallen leaves left on your grass over a long period of time can cause bald spots on your lawn as the patch of grass under them is killed. The litter of leaves blocks sunlight and retains moisture under it, causing the grass underneath to decay and smell. Raking is a blessing against these factors, and your lawn will thank you for it!
  • Mow
Mowing and raking are a spectacular duo when it comes to keeping your lawn in perfect health. Even if the speed of growth of your lawn has reduced, you should mow regularly. Do not let the height of the grass cross 3 inches, and ensure that it doesn’t fall under 2 inches either! Tall grass may be affected by the weight of snow, inviting snow mold and fungi, while extremely short grass may become too vulnerable to the cold and sustain damage easily.
  • Aerate
One of the most important eco-friendly lawn care tips to ensure a green and healthy lawn is to aerate it every other year. The soil can become compacted extremely easily, and aerating must be done to allow water, oxygen, and minerals to reach the soil. You must use the right equipment to avoid making holes in the ground that don’t remove the plugs clogging the soil. Before aerating, mow your lawn, and overseed it after aerating.
  • Overseed
A healthy lawn is dense, strong, and makes it super hard for weeds to make an entrance. Hot summer days are not the right days to plant seeds. Autumn days, on the other hand, provide the best conditions for an overseeding treatment. Another eco-friendly tip for lawn care to ensure that it is green is to overseed the thinning or bald areas of your lawn. It helps enhance the thickness and improve the self-sufficiency of the lawn to prevent the growth of weeds.
  • Fertilize
Your grass needs external products to keep its roots as well as the soil it grows in healthy. The common fertilizers you see in the market are filled with synthetic chemicals with the sole aim to keep the grass green. They don’t aim to keep your lawn healthy or provide the soil with nutrients for plants. Organic fertilizers are best recommended to keep the grass both green and healthy. They include nutrients and microorganisms that are fed back into the soil to encourage the healthy growth of roots and to help plants survive the cold of winter.
